Farmstand Gossip: Summer updates, upcoming events and Back to School!

It is hard to believe, but Summer is almost over! Soon, the kids will be back in the classroom. We still have room in our after-school program, so sign up now for Farm fun-filled afternoons to use up that extra physical energy and encourage experiential learning.

Join Duke Ob/Gyn for a Day of Wellness, Community and Giving Back!

We invite you to participate in our Family Wellness & School Supply Drive at Sunrise Community Farm Center (6407 Millhouse Road, Chapel Hill) on Saturday, Aug 10, from 1-5 pm.

Our department proudly supports the Crayons2Calculators Fill that Bus 2024 donation campaign. “Fill that Bus” is a communitywide school supply drive aimed at stocking the shelves at Crayons2Calculators. By providing essential supplies, the aim is to empower Durham Public Schools teachers to fuel student success—completely free of charge.

Additionally, we are excited to announce our support for the NC Diaper Bank’s Period Power Coalition during our school supply drive. We kindly request that attendees bring menstrual care supplies, which will be donated to those who may need them, including school-age individuals.

HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT THIS EVENT/PARTICIPATE:

Most needed school supplies can be found here. Bring any donated supplies or your Duke badge, and you’ll receive free entry into the farm.

Upcoming Events:

  • Harvest Festival: Saturday October 26, 2024 3 pm - 7 pm

  • Chapel Hill Holiday Parade: Saturday December 7, 2024 10 am-12pm

Summer Camp has been a blast this year!

Our camps are for kids who are rising Kindergarten through 8th grade. We have Farm camps (Trailblazers and Rainbows) as well as Horse Camps (Horse Immersion and Pony Camp) and our Junior Mentor leadership program. All of our campers get to work with and ride horses, not just the horse camps. Camp activities also include hikes, gardening, Farm to Table, animal care, creative expression through arts and crafts, and this year, we were able to bring back our weekly field trip to Creekstomp at Fews Ford on the Eno! Our trailblazer group with one of our other camps has been to the Eno River every Wednesday to play in the water and seek out the wildlife that lives there! We have 2 weeks left, and we still have a few camp slots open, so grab them while you can! Our garden is bursting with good things to eat, and our campers have each received a share of produce each week to take home with them. They also created many good things to eat, such as pizza, sauerkraut, pickles, fruit preserves and quesadillas filled with veggies!

Would you like to continue the Farm and Horse Camp fun throughout the year?

We have Minicamps (both Farm Camp and Horse Immersion) which run on days that the Chapel Hill Carrboro City Schools and the Durham Year Round Schools are out of session. We do many of the same activities during minicamps as we do in our summer camp, and every camper has the chance to work with and ride horses. We offer discounts for minicamps when you sign up for multiple days at a time.

  • 10 days signed up for at one time 5% discount

  • 20 days signed up for at one time 10% discount

  • 30 days signed up for at one time 15% discount

Extended care, both early (7:30-8:30) and afternoon/evening (3:30-6:00) are available as well.
